Keelan Glass from Abilene, Texas laces on her shoes before the race, warms up a little, and stretches before heading out to the starting line with the other runners.  About 2 years ago she ran her first 5k, and she stepped up to the 10k level last year.  This will be her first half-marathon.  However, Miss Glass is a little different from the other runners – Keelan is only 6 years old.

Plenty of people have told Keelan and her family that she shouldn’t run at such a young age. They say that she should train and wait until she’s in a better position to compete, but that doesn’t faze the Glass family. Keelan comes from a family of runners. She loves to run. And she hates sitting on the side-lines watching everyone go by.

We can learn a lot from Keelan’s commitment to doing something she loves. Here are 3 key steps that you can put into play today to start blazing your own trail in life:

  1. What Obstacles?

No matter what path you’re on, obstacles are inevitable. The conditions are never perfect, and the road is never without a stone or pothole. Once you know that, treat the obstacles like just any other part of the path. If Keelan paid attention to the hurdles that make marathon running an adult activity, she’d likely be a really cranky kid. Instead, she’s a marathon runner and a media darling.

  1. Take A Mental Inventory…and Begin

Do you have the knowledge and skills to get started today with what you want to do?  Remember, you don’t need all the knowledge and skills to finish, you just need to get started.

If not, what is it going to take to get what you need?  Chances are, you have more than enough experience to get started, right now.

  1. Put on Your Headphones

Critics will come out of the woodwork when you change the status quo and give you all kinds of reasons to stop.  Ignore them.  Instead, put on your headphones, get in the zone, and get going.

If a 4-year-old can run a 5k and a 6-year-old can run a half-marathon, you can do whatever you set your mind to. It’s time to lace up your shoes and hit the road.
